Do I need an accountant if I'm self-employed?
+
Not legally — but most self-employed people find the cost is easily outweighed by time saved, errors avoided, and tax reduced through legitimate deductions. A good accountant typically saves you more than their fee, and means you can focus on running your business rather than worrying about HMRC.
When is the self assessment tax return deadline?
+
Online self assessment returns must be submitted by 31 January following the end of the tax year (5 April). Paper returns must reach HMRC by 31 October. Miss these dates and you'll face an automatic £100 penalty — even if you have no tax to pay.
Do I need to register for VAT?
+
You must register for VAT once your taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period. You can also register voluntarily below this threshold — which can be beneficial if you trade mainly with VAT-registered businesses. We'll advise you on the right approach and scheme for your situation.
What is Making Tax Digital (MTD)?
+
Making Tax Digital is HMRC's initiative to digitise the UK tax system. From April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords with income over £50,000 must use MTD-compatible software to submit quarterly income and expense updates to HMRC. We help clients prepare well ahead of the deadline so there are no last-minute surprises.
How much does a small business accountant cost in the UK?
+
Fees vary by the services you need. Most small businesses pay between £50–£200 per month for bookkeeping, VAT, and annual accounts combined. We offer fixed monthly fees with no hourly surprises — get in touch and we'll give you a clear quote tailored to your situation.
